Cherating’s mellow, languid and leisurely pace and atmosphere give them a run for their money. It isn’t as commercially developed as Malaysia’s other beachside destinations – this east coast strip is starkly barren with its wide expanse of shoreline dotted with intermittent hotels, guesthouses, chalets and other businesses. In addition, Cherating beach is not exclusive to hotel guests so you’re likely to see an eclectic band of visitors enjoying the sun, surf and sand. Cherating at night is not like what you might think. Among all the chalets and hotels here, the one that provide most happening entertainment is Duyong. Exactly at about 12 midnight, there will be a live music. The type of music being performed here is Latin (like Santana), oldies and some Malay songs. Around 1.00 am, the Dee Jay will play remixed R & B music. You can dance all night long. Nightlife at Cherating will be more happening on Saturday night.

There are a lot of visitors who come here for a week and stay for a year! Most importantly Cherating is known as the site of the first Club Med in Asia as well as the spot for some of the best wave breaks in the country.The town doesn’t boast much in the way of nightlife offerings – in fact the beach and spas see more action. Furthermore, there is a scattering of bars and good restaurants that boast hard-to-resist views along Cherating’s shoreline. In addition, if you’re hard-pressed for an ice-cold pint, the hotel bars will come through no matter what.

Duyong: This Chinese restaurant on the northern extreme of the beach features glorious views along the bay and sells claypots and fresh seafood by weight. Open: 09:00-23:00, Cherating, Kampung Cherating, tel: +60 9 581 9189.

Deadly Nightshade: Homely Cherating restaurant and bar with board games and plenty of reading material where one can relax and meet fellow travellers. Food embraces local and European flavours with mains from US$4. At The Shadow of the Moon at Half-Past Four, tel: +60 9 581 9186.

Care4Café: Lovely Cherating restaurant and bar with sea views, cold beer and some lovely local noodle dishes. Local bands sometimes entertain guests live and it stays open later than most establishments in the area. Right on beach at south end.

Legend Bar & Lounge has a live band, a decent cocktail menu as well as chilled mugs of beer. The bar – located within The Legend Resort Cherating – is a beautifully decked out spot but tends to be pricey so just keep in mind that you’re paying for the attractive ambiance.
